POLICE ISSUES DIRECTIVES TO MEDIA, OBSERVERS ON ELECTION REPORTING

The police in Gulu have warned the media and election observers on giving contradictory election reports. The police told media houses and election observers that they should decease from giving contradicting reports on election matters to avoid confusion and excitement as the country gets closer to the 2011 general election.

The police gave directives that sensitive election reports covered by the media and observers be verified by the police before they are finally published or aired on local FM radio. The directives came after six FDC supporters were reported to have been poisoned by an NRM supporter after attending an FDC rally in coo pee village in Bungatira sub county in Gulu district.

But however, police reports indicate the supporters were not poisoned but collapsed after taking alcohol on empty stomach after medical reports show they were poisoned. they were however discharged after their conditions improved. the police appealed to the media and observers to be just and give objective reports not to incite violence.
