There was drama this morning in Bugabula south constituency when Asumani Kiyingi, the State Minister for lands grabbed a ballot box from Buwaibale polling station over alleged electoral malpractice.
The incident occurred at about 5am this morning before voting got underway. Eye witnesses say that Kiyingi who was accompanied by his supporters grabbed the ballot box claiming that ballot stuffing was taking place.
The minister delivered the ballot box to Kamuli central police stations as exhibit. Samuel Kiyingi, Kamuli Returning Officer says that during the raid, the presiding officer only identified as Perepetua was assaulted by the minister’s supporters.
Samuel Kiyingi says Perepetua sustained minor injuries in the scuffle that ensued in her attempt to sop the minister from taking the ballot box. He says that on close examination police discovered that the ballot box was intact and there was no sign that it had been tampered with.
Samuel Kiyingi says that police returned the ballot box to the polling station under tight security. Musa Nabendeh, Kamuli District Police Commander says that Police is holding Sharrif Kiyingi, a son to the minister in connection to the incident.
Nabendeh has warned to arrest anybody trying to disrupt the polls saying no body is above the law. He says that no body is allowed to touch any voting material unless authorized by Electoral Commission.
Asumani Kiyingi, the incumbent Bugabula south Member of Parliament is facing stiff competition from FDC’s Salaamu Musumba, Morris Henry Kibalya, NRM, Ayasi Alibawa UPC and independent George Kuwereka.
