Hundreds of supporters of Akbar Hussein Godi (incumbent MP Arua Municipality ) this evening, 11th Feb 2011 gathered at the office of their candidate on Rhino camp street amidst heavily deployed police as they got the shocking news on the ruling made over their candidate.
However, some of the supporters of Godi did not loose hope, they continuedmarching on streets, wearing fresh leaves as they normally do, showing the V-sign and shouting “anya emi sente oyee” (meaning we ate your money for free) to the police.
Justice Gidudu of the High Court in Mukono says he considered the fact that the MP for Arua Municipality Akbar Godi was a first offender, a young man of 25 years, who has two children of his own and several defendants who will suffer if the MP is to suffer the death penalty. This is the reason the judge today instead of sentencing him to death for the murder of his wife, Rehema Caesar he sent him to jail for 25 years.
Mr.Yusuf Nasur, father to the deceased however says the sentence is too light and wants an appeal seeking the death penalty.
The MP on the other hand has maintained his innocence. Speaking during mitigation for his sentence, the MP also advised young men with political ambitions not to mess with what he called the untouchables to avoid getting into trouble.
Ms Amina Atako's supporters were also riding all over the streets announcing their presence, after they received they news about Mr. Godis sentence.
