Voter Bribery Claims Persist in Kitgum

Beatrice Anywar Atim, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament for Kitgum, claims to have evidence that National Resistance Movement members last night held meetings to distribute bribes to voters in Kitgum town.

Anywar, who is contesting to retain her seat in parliament, says the bribery occurred in Padwong Parish. She says the NRM members were dishing out huge sums of money to induce people to support them in today’s elections.

Anywar says she informed the police of the matter. The police say no action was taken because they could not locate the bribers.

Anywar says her party, the Forum for Democratic Change, will take up the matter with the authorities after the elections.

Elsewhere in Kitgum town today voting started late, but once the polls opened, it progressed normally.

At Tort Hall polling station, presiding officials blame the delay on the late arrival of voters. They say could not unveil the election materials without five voters on site.

At Wetland A and B polling stations, as well as Kitgum Primary Teachers College, voting was delayed because some materials were stolen last night. Several large black basins in which ballot papers are ticked for secrecy went missing and no one could account for their disappearance.
